It's time for a #booksandtea pairing! The Sweeteas It's time for a #booksandtea pairing! The Sweeteas book club recently finished reading Some Kind of Happiness by Claire Legrand and WOW! Even though this is a middle grade novel there are times where it reads older. There is depression, anxiety, and divorce representation in a way that is so mature, realistic, creative, and spot-on. This is the kind of book I wish I had when I was in my tweens and trying to figure out why I couldn't stop feeling like everything was wrong. The main character, Finley, provides us an intimate look into her worlds - the "real" world and the "made up" world she created to deal with her depression. There's so much I want to say about this book but I don't want to spoil anything for you. I HIGHLY recommend Some Kind of Happiness, especially if you're looking for depression representation πŸ™Œ To match the mood of this story, I paired Ashen Shadows herbal tea with my reading. This is a green tea and lemongrass blend with hints of sweetness from honey powder and linden leaf and flower. I received this quote on a hand-written, tiny scroll tied with ribbon by a living statue person at the 2019 Oregon Country Fair. These words lit me up. You see, the 2019 Fair was when I was handing out free sampler packs before opening up the shop. It was when I was panicking because I had been trying for 7 futile months to find a job. It was when I started hitting up against a wall in my relationship with Mr Sweetea and my friendships because I was refusing to face my traumas. I was refusing to open up and heal. Instead, I was clinging to old coping mechanisms, one of which was being so harsh on myself that there was no room for success, no room to grow or thrive. And then I got this scroll with these life-giving words. I remember tearing up in the middle of the 8, trying to hold myself together as the weight of all the burdens I've insisted on carrying started falling off of me. Because you know what I never said I couldn't be? A success. A strong, confident woman. Loving and beloved. Tenacious. Hard-working. Joyful. Inspiring. Adventurous. Capable.
